My name is Mrs. Terruso and this school year I will be teaching English as a New Language (ENL) to grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th. I love teaching students who arrive to P.S. 204 from all over the world with so much knowledge, and who speak many different languages. It's very rewarding to see how hard they work and how quickly our students learn English.
This year we have 2 models of teaching English. The first is an integrated English model, where the language is taught in the student's classroom together with other content areas such as science, math, social studies, etc. and the second is a pull out program more suitable for newcomer students (who have been in the United States less than a year) at the entering or emerging level of language acquisition.
In order to enter the ENL program a student must take the NYSITELL New York State Identification for English Language Learners, and in order to exit the program the student must to pass the NYSESLAT New York state English as a Second Language achievement Test.
The NYSESLAT test is administered every Spring to measure the student's language gains in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing over the period of the school year. The results of this test are described in 5 levels in the next few pages. Please read them to understand your child's present level.
I look forward to working together with you to make this a happy and successful 2017 - 2018 school year for our students.
