• Dear Families,

Welcome to Class 4-405.  My name is Stephanie Tedone, and I am looking forward to teaching your child this year.  I am confident that our year together will be a productive one, full of new joys and challenges as your child continues to learn and grow.  I would like to address some important points pertaining to both matters of curriculum and classroom procedures.

With regard to literacy instruction, PS 204 continues to use the program Journeys.  It has reading and writing components.  The program focuses on vocabulary, comprehension, and grammar.  There will be use of a textbook and a consumable workbook.  I will be giving the students comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling assessments based on each lesson.  There will also be assessments asking students to use evidence from the text.

With regard to math instruction, PS 204 continues to use GoMath.  GoMath provides very clear and hands on math instruction.  It also uses “real world” mathematical problem solving.  The GoMath classwork book and homework book have been combined.  This is excellent because you have a chance to see the classwork that was completed and a chance to review it with your child as she is doing the homework.  There will be a test after each chapter. I strongly encourage students to show all work when solving math problems.

Next, a few words about my homework policy.  Homework should be completed each night, reflecting effort.  Thank you so much for encouraging your child to make homework a priority.  When completing homework students are encouraged to write in clear and complete sentences when applicable.  Also, I am going to be teaching them to echo the question in their responses to ensure a sense of focus.  When completing math homework the students should show all work to show how they have arrived at an answer.

If a child has incomplete homework I will mark it down on a calendar that is in your child’s take home folder.  Please check the folder daily and initial any incomplete homework.  Then have your child complete the homework as soon as possible.  If your child has trouble completing something from the homework, make a note to me in your child’s homework assignment book and I will address it as a whole class or individually, depending on the circumstance. If your child is absent I will give him the homework and it should be completed in a timely manner.

In the fourth grade we will be grading using percentages.  Tests, class participation, and homework will be taken into consideration when given report card grades.

This year’s ELA is scheduled for March .  This year’s Math is scheduled for May .  Please know that everything your child learns this year will serve him well when he takes the tests this spring.

I truly appreciate your help and support.  If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. Please write me a note and I will respond as soon as possible.  Also, on Tuesday afternoons from 2:20-3:00 is parent engagement time if you need to set up an appointment to speak to me.  P.S. 204 has a website ps204k.org that is a useful tool for important dates in our school.  You can also access GoMath and Journeys through Thinkcentral.com.

Thank you, and I look forward to a wonderful year!

    Sincerely,

                                      Mrs. Tedone
